In Aigues-Mortes on 17 August 1893, French workers assassinated others – Italians – with part of the population remaining unmoved. This was followed by anti-French riots throughout Italy. The national press in both countries made a great noise, talking in terms of a looming war. The governments then used pacification. All the accused were acquitted after a botched enquiry. The families of the victims received financial compensation. The massacre then disappeared little by little from the history of France, as if wiped out of memories. Until recently.
